13A- Reading Reflection No.1

The book I that read was the Wright Brothers by David McCollough. This is a biography of the two brothers who invented the airplane. This book was inspiring and really showed that through hard work anything can be achieved. The most surprising aspect of the book was the fact that the brothers worked over 10 years to make their flying machine work. They never gave up. Their perseverance was really something I admired and now think is something all entrepreneurs should have. The two brothers didn’t possess any trait that I didn’t admire. They were intelligent and creative and were strongly passionate about their project. The one time they had to face adversity was when the U.S. Army refused to recognize their work. The brothers were determined to sell their invention to their country but the media and public tried to convince them that “man wasn’t mean to fly”. Eventually, the intuitive brothers moved their flying machine to France where they were recognized as heroes. Wilbur and Orville changed the world forever and I will always be fascinated by their work and their passion to never give up.
The competencies that the brothers exhibited were problem solving, technical skills, teamwork and forward thinking. The fact that the Wright Brothers worked so well with each other proved that team work can help make an idea a reality.
The one part of the reading that was confusing to me was how the U.S. blatantly ignored the letter the brothers sent to the army. I just can’t believe they didn’t see the great potential of the Wright Brothers flying machines. It was amazing to read how even the public and media wanted nothing to do with their efforts.
The two questions I would ask the brothers would be first, if they were ever afraid to fly because I have a big fear of flying. Secondly, I would ask them if they ever thought flying would be as technologically advanced as it is now. I would love to hear about what they dreamed flying would potentially turn into. If they ever thought of the idea of the airport.

I think the Wright Brothers opinion of hard work would be that there is no other way to achieve your dreams unless you put in 100 percent. I share the opinion but sometimes I lack the drive to put in so much hard work.  I think they would agree that passion and hard work go hand and hand.

  1. Hi Ciara, so interesting to see how modern technology has changed, what took the Wright brothers 10 years to achieve is done so easily today. Also it is amazing to see how close minded people were in those days, they weren't ready for big changes. I feel like in today's times theres always change and our generations are embracing it. Seeing how they completely started an entire industry and how complex it is today is amazing.
