21A- Reading Reflection No. 2

General Theme: The book that I read was Inbound Marketing by Brian Halligan. This book was an easy read for me because I am an advertising major and I learn about this a lot in class. Halligan focused his book on describing the customer driven marketing method of inbound marketing. He started by explaining how the changing technological world has changed the world of marketing forever. Old methods such as push marketing is outdated and consumers now only respond to pull and inbound marketing. Halligan argued that inbound marketing is the best way to market your product because it is customer driven rather than product driven. The book focuses on creating content that the customer will be attracted to and that the marketing team can receive active analytics on. Halligan argues that building following and traffic is the first step to having a successful business.

This book enhanced my overall knowledge of entrepreneurship because It showed how important marketing is in the process of building your company. Inbound marketing is a combination of social media, blogging, SEO and analytics. Inbound marketing considers that the consumer wants to engage with a company and have a positive attitude towards the product. A business that is customer driven makes sure that the customer is taken care of first. This idea is important for any entrepreneur endeavor.

In this class I think designing an inbound marketing plan for our ideas would be a great tool for expanding our company plan. Marketing is a huge part of creating a successful business and it is important for any kind of product. This assignment would include making a full plan on social media and following it with analytics tools.

My biggest “aha” moment was when Halligan explained how to be a specialist in inbound marketing. He stated that to be a good inbound marketer you do not have to work in a huge agency, you just have to show your passion and skill. People are attracted to people who are passionate about what they are selling. This is something I can use in any aspect of my career.

  1. The book I read also spoke about how to focus on creating information that would be interesting to your customer but specifically through social media. It focused on how to perfect your social profile, whether personal or business related. Inbound marketing is something we encounter every day with the internet. Your assignment idea is a great way to expand on ways to enhance our customer market. I think this idea would be interesting especially doing it through a social media account.

  2. Hi Ciara,

After reading your post, I really want to learn more about inbound marketing. I don't really have any background in advertising so it would be interesting for me to read because I feel like I could get a much better understanding of successful and effective advertising techniques. For my reading reelection, I chose to read "The Art of Social Media: Power Tips for Power Users” by Guy Kawasaki, I learned more about marketing to customers on social media platforms. However, if I combined the key lessons from the book you read and mine, it would help me better understand the different mechanisms that go into selling a product or service.
