http://infoweb.newsbank.com/resources/doc/nb/news/166ADEACDE823228?p=WORLDNEW
- This article focuses on how the residents of Pinecrest in Miami, Florida are required to pay $800 dollars for a certificate of approval to rent their properties through Airbnb.
- The problem in the article is that residents should have their own freedom to rent out their properties if the own them. Pinecrest is placing restrictions for property holders because they claim renting out properties causes "noise, safety issues and trash". This is a problem for people who live in these homes temporarily and would like to make money to rent them out. This law prevents individuals from making business off of the popular tourist industry in Miami.
- The individuals that have the problem are the home owners that are seeking business opportunities by renting out their homes. All the hoops that they have to cross makes the whole renting process very disorganized and expensive. This unfortunate set of circumstances hinders the people who would like to rent out their properties from making money off of something they rightfully own.

- This article focuses on how part-time professors at Miami universities are not getting paid well and would like to unionize.
- The main problem in this article is that part-time professors at colleges such as Broward and Miami-Dade College are feeling as though they were lied to by administration that one day they would receive a full-time job. These part-time professors are very under-paid and do not receive the same benefits as a full-time professor, for example, medical insurance. 45% of professors are Miami-Dade College are adjunct. This is a very large percentage of unhappy employees.
- The state of Florida is faced with the problem that they must find a way to pay these individuals or offer more benefits for them. The main people who suffer from the problem are the part-time professors who are feeling under-appreciated at their job.

- This story talks about how the people of the Grove area in Miami want to preserve the Treister's Building, a 1970s original Miami building with class architecture from the time.
- The main problem is that now with the times changing, developers want to build more and new buildings all throughout Miami. However, many people of Coconut Grove have passionate feelings towards the old architecture that gives so much of the area its character. Individuals are signing petitions just to keep old buildings standing in the area. The local developers and residents of Coconut Grove cannot come to a middle-ground when trying to develop in the area with these old buildings. The developers do not find these buildings to be historic or anything of that nature.
- The residents of Coconut Grove and the land developers have the problem that they cannot find a solution to building in the Grove and maintaining much of the character that the Grove is known for. I feel as though this problem is very common in many historic towns. People feel very strongly towards keeping architecture and art alive but when is it time to move forward?
UF, facing lawsuit , opens door for white nationalist to speak- but at new date.
http://infoweb.newsbank.com/resources/doc/nb/news/166A6D147473F2B0?p=WORLDNEWS
- This story addresses the lawsuit UF is going to face if they do not let a white nationalist speak on campus grounds.
- The main problem in the story is that Universities are commonly faced with the challenge if they should allow controversial people speak on campus. This First Ammendment right is very difficult to control, even on school grounds. UF is technically a public space where anyone can speak their mind as long as they are not inciting violence. UF is not facing charges because they are trying to protect their students from the violence this might cause but also respect the freedom of speech given to every individual.
- The people facing this problem are University administrators who struggle with deciding whether or not they should allow certain people to speak on campus if it might incite a riot. Safety does come first to Universities but the law can sometime get in the way of that.
How to save $9 Billion Dollars a year - letting teens sleep in and start school later.
http://infoweb.newsbank.com/resources/doc/nb/news/166B6A34189FA278?p=WORLDNEWS
- This article describes how there would be greater academic performance and less car accidents from sleepy teen drivers if schools started no later than 8:30 am.
- The main problem is that teens are not getting enough sleep and are under-performing in class. Young adolescent minds are meant to go to sleep late and wake up late. These students are not getting their full 9 hours of sleep that doctors believe can help them. Specialists claim that by letting students sleep longer, in the long term, it should help save money rather than lose money for school districts.
- The people facing this problem are the students who need their sleep to perform better in school. These students do not have control over what time they can show up to school. Enforcing new start times can be beneficial for all teen's brain health across the US.
Wow, the heavy fee for a certificate to rent out your home on Airbnb in Pinecrest definitely just seems like a way for the city to generate more revenue without a legitimate purpose. I think the issue of added noise and trash is blown a little out of proportion by the city. Also, I think it's clever that you included UF's issue with the National Policy Institute in your post. This is definitely a great example of a problem caused by a conflict between student safety concerns and freedom of speech.
ReplyDeleteThe article on Airbnb is very interesting. I am from Miami and did not know that Pinecrest is currently being charged for renting out their homes. It is understandable that this is happening because Pinecrest is a very family-oriented neighborhood. It makes sense that they wouldn’t want to rent out to have people throw parties, etc. Also, the article about students sleeping in makes so much sense. I always get more out of a class when they start around 9 AM. My high school classes used to start at around 8 AM so I would have to wake up at around 6:45 AM in order to make it to my homeroom bells. I definitely did not get a full 9 hours of sleep every night.
ReplyDeleteThe University of Florida is really in a no win situation as the white nationalist Richard Spencer continues to make appeals to speak on UF's campus. Being a public university, UF is held to the first amendment, freedom of speech. They, most unfortunately, cannot silence any voice simply because the majority of students on campus do not agree with him. However, with his views being labeled as hate speech, I believe Spencer should be barred from speaking on campus due to the dangerous consequences that could occur if he was granted permission for a speaking date.
